Different thinking…
I’m flabbergasted that my former place of employment is still suffering from IT issues. I thought that things would get better with time. I heard a number of upgrades were in the works and thought to myself that this would most definitely help with the situation. Sadly, I found out this just isn’t the case.
While I was working there, I always had a feeling that something was amiss. I got along with the users… I just seemed to click with them. But in regards to I.T. policies and procedures, I felt “out of touch”. I used to think it was me and I was the one that possessed the wrong way of thinking. As time grew on and I talked to fellow I.T. acquaintances, the real picture emerged: You must keep up with technology and use technology to make your job the easiest it can be. Ultimately, I left the company due to resistance I felt in the department and coincidence of an outstanding job opening being presented to me. After working at my current job for only three months and receiving a gold medal award due to my customer service skills, I knew my way of doing things was just fine, thank you very much.
Things we are currently exploring: virtualization of the desktop via thin clients and using biometrics for authentication. When somebody’s system gets hosed, restore a new virtual desktop. When someone forgets their password for a particular system…. Oh. Wait. They won’t have to remember a password as long as their finger is still attached to their hand. Technology is cool!
