Well. It’s been a crappy last few weeks. The whole family has been sick. I ended up going to the doctor to get some medicine but everyone seems to be feeling better now.
My company is hiring a third I.T. guy. I’m still not sure if they’re replacing me or what? I’m just insecure I guess.
The 915 Mhz wireless connection has been running great. The only problem I’ve had since its birth 4 months ago was the HEAD machine’s wireless card half-ass crapping out. The biggest problems I’ve had are problems I wouldn’t have expected. The DSL donors house had a buried service line burn out a couple of months ago. Their housekeeper unplugged the setup at one point for some unknown reason. I had to reboot the modem last week remotely because it lost its IP address to Verizon. They must have been doing router work or something. Yup! The 915 Mhz connection has been working remarkably well. Other than the card getting weak and needing replacing, I’ve only had to restart the networking service on the head unit once because I forgot to change the ON BOOT setting in the ifcfg-eth1 config file. (Power blinked on and off.) Of course after I post this…. it won’t be working.
Got a couple of lan parties coming up. The boy and I are going to Violent_J’s house this upcoming Saturday for a ROC test lan. The main ROC event is on February 11th. I’m considering this as a Birthday LAN because the 12th is my birthday. We’ll both be going to that. Probably A Pissed Guy too.
Other than that, life keeps chugging along. Looking at upgrading my two year old rig with a new Opteron 170. We’ll see though.

I have had enough! I’m tired of being everyone’s “computer guy.” The problem is that I’m too nice. If someone has a problem, I’m too egger to help. No more! I spent two hours of my Saturday helping out some friends of ours set up their new laptop. I “borrowed” some Internet from the neighbor, let them use my radio, and “assumed” I’d be compensated. Nope! They call me up and tell me they aren’t going to pay the guy next door for high speed Internet and I can come and get my radio. Then the male of the household BITCHES about how he wants the laptop configured. I nod my head in agreement while looking for an opportunity to break the conversation and leave.
On the way home, I thought back to all the people I’ve helped and never received or asked for money. (Not counting immediate family: Dad, sister-in-law, etc) I’ve spent way too many lunch hours disinfecting a co-workers computer because they have so much spyware that they can’t use their computers. How many evenings and weekends have I blown helping out others? Hijack This!, Adaware, Spybot, and AVG are all these bitches need. And quit installing P2P programs and browsing for free Porn!!!!!! Don’t get me started on Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
From now on, I’m too BUSY to help you with your problems unless you are going to pay me a rate of $40 an hour. That’s it. That’s that. Oh yeah. No more free phone support either!

I went over to a friends house today to help them set up their new laptop. They can’t get DSL. Cable and wireless are just too expensive for what their needs are. On a hunch, I walked outside with my laptop and ran netstumbler. Low and behold the 5 access points spitting out their info! One of them was actually running WPA, two others showed enough strength that Window’s Zero configuration showed them, and the other two were too far out.
In the house was a different story. I went to one side of the house that bordered a neighbor and the ‘linksys’ SSID popped up. I thought ahead and brought my extra WRT54G with me. I have DD-WRT loaded on it. I cranked up the power via firmware, changed it to client mode, stuck in the window, and rebooted it.
Needless to say they have free Internet access now. I should have logged into the unprotected WRT54GS that they’re leeching from and change the default password to something else, but I didn’t.
Is what I did wrong? For what my retired friends due with the Internet, I doubt it. E-mail and light web browsing aren’t going to hurt that connection.
I can’t believe how stupid people are. They go to the store and buy one of these units and simple plug it in. I told my friends that they ’should’ go and tell the neighbor about what they were able to do and offer them some money to share the connection. We’ll see what happens.

My web host erased my images directory by mistake. If you’re looking for something and can’t find it, it’s not there.
I have backups at home. I’ll probably have to do some re-linking too. Shit happens!
