Vacation Update

December 29th, 2005

Fitzwell, Silvano, and I went out wardriving yesterday and had a pretty good time. We know what we need to do for our next outing. :)

I went over to the school today and gave all their systems hostnames and configured them to use a network printer. I tried to get the teachers laptops to connect to my AP on the tower. PCMCIA cards just don’t seem to have the power to connect. My Intel Pro 2200 wireless card in my Dell connects with 60%. The centrino chipset kicks ass!

Went over to the school today and got their Internet connection up and running! Woot!

Ruby on Rails - AJAX

I’ve been scouring the net looking for seating examples, charts, etc. I’m having little luck in finding anything that is usable. I’ve been thinking to myself, “Do I really want to learn PHP?” The answer was yes… up to last night.

I came across two gems: AJAX and Ruby on Rails. These languagues are changing the way the web works. In the registration script I wrote, all clicks lead to another form (page) on the server. This periodic table http://code.jalenack.com/periodic/ chats with the server in real time. You can also drag and drop stuff with AJAX. Check this demo out: http://www.cyberdummy.co.uk/test/dd.php And look at this: http://www.deheus.net/petrik/demo/stickies/ just drag the little yellow stick somewhere on the screen. How do you think that would work to build your own custom seating charts?

Basically. I’ve convinced myself that PHP is not the way to go. Ruby on Rails and AJAX are the way to go. I’m still looking though. :)

L.A.M.P. Again.

Around a year ago, I reported having L.A.M.P. running on a SimplyMepis install. LAMP!!! That was a year ago… and a bunch of distro installs ago too. I’ve now got Ubuntu configured on my laptop with Apache2, PHP, and MySQL. It’s time for me to dive into PHP again. I need to do some major rewriting of the registration script for ROC’s registration page. I’d also like to get something up for the little 28th party too. The reason I went to Ubuntu was the fact that SimplyMepis isn’t pushing code and updates quick enough for me. When my one year old laptop’s Intel wireless NIC isn’t found by default… something is wrong. Ubuntu works out of the box and all I had to do was minor changes to get WPA support. All is good.
